You can get things like Brazilian Cherry for $1.99 per square foot (that's under $20 per square yard if you're comparing to carpet prices). Craig's List is a great place to hire the labor -- you should spend less than $500 per room for installation. I have personally installed two floors of hardwood in my house (saving the installation costs), and it's something that any homeowner can do.
