Organic: Is It Better For My Thyroid?

eating organic cartoonI‘m not one who goes gaga over everything “natural”.

In fact, I enjoy pointing out to all-natural obsessed friends that E-coli is a natural substance, but not at all a healthy thing to consume. Ergo, natural isn’t necessarily healthy. And, look around a hospital OR where manufactured plastic tubing and bags of blood save lives. Ergo, man made isn’t necessarily heinous.

However, based on my nonscientific, but unmistakable observations of my body’s reactions to what I’ve been consuming, I’ve come to the conclusion that organic food is safer than the chemically mutated, sprayed and over processed food I’ve been eating.

Switching from “real” bleached and processed sugar to Splenda in 1999 being perhaps the worse thing I’ve done to my body. Did you know that sucralose is as toxic as DDT? Yeah, me either. I switched to it, because Atkins said it was “healthier” for me than real sugar. Nope, he was wrong. I’m convinced that Splenda was a huge accessory in the murder of my thyroid. I used a lot of it – in my coffee, to sweeten my breakfast and only drank beverages made with Splenda.

Switching from cow’s milk to soy milk was a pretty boneheaded move, too. I used it – along with Splenda – on my oatmeal every morning for years. Who knew soy (natural or not) was toxic to one’s thyroid? Not I. Back in the 90s, soy was THE super food to add to your diet. No one said it’s bad for one’s thyroid.

Now comes evidence that fructose (corn based sweetener) is bad. Oh, and that very convenient, low fat and tasty microwave popcorn I thought was a healthy snack? Bad, bad and bad.

If you’re getting the idea that I’ve developed a phobia about food, you’re right! Good grief! What the HELL is a person supposed to eat?

I’m gonna go with real food. Organic soy aside, I’m convinced that real food has better odds of being better for you. Real food without pesticides or herbicides. Real food that hasn’t been pulverized to smithereens and stuck back together with gawd-knows-what.

So, I’m going organic — expensive, pain-in-the-ass NOT convenient real organic food.

Thanks for stopping by! I really need to quit the Splenda too. It seems everything is bad for us after initially seeming to be good.

Inis, check out this link in the Washington Post this week:

http://www.washingtonpost.com/wp-dyn/content/article/2010/01/01/AR2010010101611.html

I didn’t read it all (since I eat a lot o’ crap), but it might prove helpful to you. I think it touches more on obesity issues, but might have some insights on humans were designed to eat. Here’s hoping you feel better in ‘10!

Yes, it appears that we have to research ourselves and trust only checked resources. I was prescribed a soy containing medicine by my endocrinologist who was supposed to treat my Hashimoto! Many months later I read that soy is not good for my gland.
And it is true that natural not always means safe – there are many poisonous herbs, for example!
