De-sick-en-ing My Thyroid

in WEIGHT & THYROID SAGA

thyroid_gland_diagI felt amazingly victorious after getting my hard won prescription for Nature Thyroid  — until I attempted to fill said prescription.

The shortly enjoyed victory turned to dismay when I ran around to every pharmacy in town.  No one had Nature Thyroid.  Some even looked at me like I was asking for Martian milk. In the end had to settle for Armour.

Armour is desiccated thyroid. However, I’d heard often that hypothyroid patients have better results with Nature Thyroid.  So, then, I settled for what I could get.  I said to myself: Self, Armour has got to be better than the synthetic crap I’m taking.  And I was right.

Desiccated thyroid is better.  I have my own experience as solid proof.  After two solid months on 3 grains of Armour, I’m a lucid human being who once again grows body hair.  Never in my life did I ever expect to rejoice at having to shave my legs.  Mascara is back on my dressing table for I have actual lashes on which to apply it.

Thanks to Armour, I can hold extended conversations and give a care about what is said in those extended conversations.  I have energy and can think much clearer now.

It’s ironic, then, that it is the doctor I fired who prescribed the two months of Armour.  And it’s ironic that I may have to go back to the doctor I fired to get another ’script.

My husband recently switched jobs and his insurance included my old doctor — a doctor who I adored and I had to give up when our health insurance dropped her.

I made an appointment with the old doctor and was so excited to see her again.  I really, really like my old doctor.  And she was the one who recommended Armour to me way, way back in the day.  Unfortunately, I took a generic desiccated thyroid because insurance at the time wouldn’t cover Armour (don’t get me started on frakin’ insurance companies!) and I didn’t find any relief on it.

Imagine my surprise when my old doctor scuffed at Armour.  I mean she actually made a disgusted grunt noise in her throat.  She maintains that Armour is impossible to regulate.

Here’s a brief recap of our conversation:

Me:  I’m on 3 grains of Armour.

Doc:  (grunt) Armour?

Me:  Yes, and I love it!  I feel so much better on it!

Doc:  Well, sure.  It’s like pouring lighter fluid on a gasoline fire.

Me:  But, Doc, I really, really, REALLY feel better on it.

Doc:  People feel great on methamphetamine, too.  I wouldn’t prescribe that for you either.

I left the appointment with her more than a little angry, cussing under my breath aloud at these effing doctors who won’t effing help me.  Then, I calmed down a bit.  The doc made a valid point.  Just because I feel better on it doesn’t necessarily mean it’s healthy for me.  There has got to be good reason she changed her opinion on desiccated thyroid, right?

I jumped on the Atkins bandwagon.  I jumped on the Splenda bandwagon.  I jumped on the lose weight and get healthy bandwagon — all I got from it is a busted thyroid.  I don’t want to jump on another bandwagon and wind up worse off in the future.

Tomorrow, I’ll take my last Armour and begin taking Synthroid again.  We’ll see.  In addition to changing to desiccated thyroid two months ago, I’d made some other changes in my diet — banishing Splenda to the toxic cabinet being the biggest change, and taking B vitamins and iron on a regular basis another big change.  What if taking the vitamins and lack of DDT-disguised-as-sweetener in my morning coffee are partially responsible for me feeling better?

So, I’m going to try it my old Doc’s way.  However, if I slip down the slippery zombie-slope again …. I’ll have to grovel back to my new-old doctor for an Armour ’script.

There’s a so-called thyroid specialist in town who isn’t covered by our insurance.  I may set up an appointment with him anyway, just to get a feel for the guy.

Whatever it takes. I refuse to go through life as a walking can’t-get-out-of-bed dead person.  Stayed tuned.
