Vintage Stuff and the Fire Code
We had a fire inspection at our antique mall — American Classics Marketplace in Colorado Springs. The results of which lead to major changes.
No more twinkle lights AT ALL. No more hanging anything from the ceiling AT ALL. And no more extension cords AT ALL. The only power source can be a power strip and the actual outlet on the wall.
Yeah. Not a happy camper am I. The ceiling thing I can abide by. It makes sense. Practically every booth had massive amounts of stuff hanging from the acoustic tile grid blocking the fire sprinklers from doing their jobs — should the unthinkable happen.
However, I don’t understand the ban on extension cords and twinkle lights. Good lighting is crucial to displays. As long as the cords are new and undamaged – what’s the problem?
Well, needless to say, I had tons of cords and twinkle lights all of which were tucked in behind and around furniture and fixtures. I spent two solid days rearranging everything in my space to take the best advantage of the measley track lighting and the ONE power outlet in my space.
And my feet are killing me leading me to rethink my dream. I have heel spurs – excruciating pain with no cure. If I can’t take a mere two days on my feet, how in the heck will I pull off 10 hours, 7 days a week in a shop of my own?
Time for a glass of wine and a pity part

Thanks for the fire code info. I’ll keep this in mind when doing up my booth this weekend. Email Val at the Red Shed. She has some great shoe inserts that help her on her feet. I keep meaning to ask her what kind they are.
Thanks, Margo. I’ll get in touch with her.
