A Mantel Sans Greenery

in Crochet, Decorating

This year, I donated the ugly gold-tipped garland we’ve had stored for 5 years. I used it once and hated it. I usually don’t like fake flora of any kind. Dried flowers? Absolutely. Plastic or silk? Not so much.

Through the lovely Garland Show & Tell hosted by Nesting Place, I saw a charming ribbon garland created by The Tulip Lady. Completely inspired, I dug through my stash of lace and ribbons to fashion a version of my own.

The strips of lace were crocheted by me some years ago — a design experiment gone awry. In they went to my ever expanding box of I’ll-find-some-way-of-using-this-someday.

Hung the vintage silver Pyramid ornaments from the lace, draped a silver-bead garland, and layered a glitzy wire and bead garland with tucked in pine cones on top of the mantel.

The Mikasa porcelain Santa sleigh is a prized, prized possession. It was a very generous Christmas gift years ago from good friends. The copper tray helps set Santa off from the butter colored wall.

To tie-in, I placed a few pine cones on the cute little shelf holding another prized possession — a collection crystal goblets inherited from my mother. Vintage red Shiny Brite ornaments bright up the urns of peacock feathers.

There. Our holiday mantel and nary a plastic pine needle in sight :)
