Mash Potatoes

MOTHER’S DAY 2008

0

I hope everyone had a very nice Mother’s Day. We kept it simple at home this year — just my mom, brother, husband and I for a dinner of ham and sides with decadent cheesecake for dessert.

I “cooked”. Here are the delicious mash potatoes I made.

Shhhh, it’s a secret. Not really. Truth is I abhor cooking at all and enjoy the clean up even less. Thank goodness for microwaves and ready-to-heat products. You’d be thankful, too, if you’d ever have to eat my from-scratch cooking. It isn’t a lovely thing AT ALL!

I did get up at 5:30AM to put the ham in the oven. Ham, by the way, is a great no fuss staple for those of us who don’t cook well. It requires no prep at all to taste fabulous. Just place it in a pan, roast per directions on the wrapper and eat!

Typically, we take mom out for Mother’s Day to a nice brunch or buffet. It’s so much fun to get all dressed up, have a champagne toast to Mom, eat Eggs Benedict and let someone else handle the clean up.  But the budget just wouldn’t allow that this year. My mom is so understanding, too. Love her for that.

Setting the table was fun. I prefer a rather simple table. I used a robin’s egg blue damask tablecloth and napkins my mom gifted to me on Christmas 2007. As you can see, it was fresh out of the package. I don’t own an ironing board even if I wanted to iron it.  I had to fold the cloth in half as it’s long enough to fit our table when the two leaves are in. The square pink candles are vintage — “Woolworth 5 cents” was printed on the wrapping.

The crystal goblets are authentic Austrian lead crystal. The set of six collected by mom in the 70′s are not only dear to my heart, they’re the most elegant things in my home. I just love them, and I waver between putting them safely on a shelf and using them for their intended purpose.  My brother has six more — and yes I’m scheming to get them, too. ;)

The Blue Willow gives me the same grief. The thought of knives scratching and damaging the surface, or having a piece chipped during dinner causes me much stress. But, then again, why have these beautiful things if one never uses them? I’m sure this pro/con debate goes on in many a hostess’s mind.

My mother’s place setting held her gift — a gorgeous Marquis style crown brooch. Mom loves rhinestone and crystal jewelry – Nolan Miller is a favorite, so I knew she’d love this piece. I love it, too. Proof is the inventory in the store.
Are my color combinations weird? I like pink with just about anything :) The pink candles and potted azalea just pop (hate that term, but use it anyway) against the robin’s egg blue, don’t you think? The multi-colored crystal goblets add wonderful color as well.
All in all, it was a very nice Mother’s Day.
